70s seasons

The 70's look is about to hit stores in Spring/Summer 2011 it's all about floppy felt hats, earthy tones, exotic jewels, super-high platforms, tailored clothes nipped in at the waist with tasseled or gold detail belts, silk blouses worn tucked into high waisted trousers, Studio 54-esque flowing silk disco gowns and the all important brown-tinted sunglasses.  Inspiration coming from the catwalk shows; Marc Jacobs, Derek Lam, Yves Saint Laurent and Louis Vuitton and it gives you a good idea on what to look out for on the high street.

There are two sides to the ‘70s revival: the glamorous ‘70s look from chic New York club Studio 54 and the softer 70s which is more like chiffons and paisley prints.

This season has returned it’s all about:

  1. High waisted wide-leg pants or flares, smartly belted in.
  2. Neat bow-blouses, especially ones with billowing or bishop sleeves. Particularly great are fabrics like silk and satin.
  3. Roll neck sweaters tucked into pants or skirts. Add to the '70s effect by layering over beaded necklaces or a vest.
  4. For those more daring, a pair of hot pants are the ultimate '70s item.
  5. A smart printed jumpsuit is another great alternative

70s sophisticated fashion by night is all about look-at-me shimmering fabrics and cuts that either tightly hug or sensually drape over the body. You must:

  1. Choose high sheen fabrics with a '70s disco-inspired edge, like lurex or silk; anything with a metallic thread.
  2. Add a ruffled neckline under a brocade blazer or tuxedo jacket, paired with a sharp pair of pants.
  3. Long, slinky gowns with draping, low necklines or dress slits are the ultimate in '70s night time glamour.
