The importance of sleep

No-one likes to be tired and crabby, sleep is all too important – Here’s why -

Previous studies have concluded that up to 90% of people’s health suffers as a result of not getting enough sleep.

Sleep is vital for maintaining good health and a positive mental wellbeing.

During the deepest stages of the sleep cycle, the immune system repairs damage inflicted on the body throughout the waking hours while important chemicals in the brain refuel for the day to come.

There are several types of sleep disorders including insomnia (poor quality sleep), hypersomnia (extreme sleepiness) sleep apnea (awake frequently due to cessation of breathing) and narcolepsy (excessive daytime sleepiness) to name a few.

Sleep disturbance itself is a significant cause of additional stress with increased health problems and can even affect longevity. It tends to be persistent and has been associated with painful musculoskeletal conditions that may result in irritability and feelings of misery.

A good night’s sleep is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle; however, more and more of us complain of sleeplessness.

We spend one-third of our lives sleeping, so it makes sense to invest in a bed that can improve your comfort and overall health. Many people don’t realize the reason for their neck or back pain is literally right underneath them; it’s their mattress and pillow. It may not be the underlying cause for back pain but it can certainly be an exacerbating factor.

Improvements in sleeping patterns can often be achieved when there is a reduction in tension in the spine. This reduced tension improves nerve transmission throughout the body.

Sleep, like everything else in the body, is controlled by the nervous system; it is one of the most important functions of the brain which needs to dampen sensory input that may keep us awake. People suffering from pain or other sensory conditions that contribute to continued activation of the brain may have difficulty sleeping.

Do not under estimate the power of a good sleep, but please, no nightmares!
