Dubai - United Arab Emirates
First held in February 2012, the Dubai Desert Road Run is held several times a year, appealing to all elements of the running community – from first time social runners, to some of the best UAE based athletes. Organised as a community event in which runners of all abilities are encouraged to participate, the Dubai Desert Road Run features two distances; 10km and 3km. Both distances are run on private roads over a safe, traffic free course.
The start and finish for each Dubai Desert Road Run is at the heart of ‘the village’ in The Sevens stadium, some 40km off the Dubai coastline.
All finishers of the Dubai Desert Road Run are rewarded at the finish line with a bespoke event medal. Additionally, those that finish competitively in the first 3 of their respective age groups also receive trophies, which are presented on completion of the mornings runs, together with a prize raffle in which participants that are present have the opportunity to win spot prizes from Jabra.
The race day location of the Dubai Desert Road Run is a familiar venue to most residents of Dubai, ‘The Sevens’ as it plays host to many events over the year, including the Dubai Rugby Sevens and the Dubai Amateur Football League.
Set up for the Dubai Desert Road Run is centred around the ‘Players Club’, with comprehensive facilities available including ample free parking, changing rooms with showers and toilets, plus shaded seating areas.
The start/finish area of the Dubai Desert Road Run is in the centre of The Sevens ‘village area’ between the swimming pool and the stadium pitch. Food and beverage is also close to this area, with coffee, tea, and light snacks available.
As The Sevens is around 40km from the centre of Dubai, public transport is sparse. Recommended transport is either by private car, or taxi.
For those that require a locker to secure your bag, there are a limited number of lockers available on a first available service. Should you require a locker, please go to the security office at the front of the players club. Locker keys are given against a form of ID, held as security until the return of the locker key.
Want to help out with the Dubai Desert Road Run? They are always looking for enthusiastic, committed people to assist with the event. On the day duties include helping with race number collection, water station and medal distribution, taking event photos, amongst others.
If you would like to get involved, go on their website and send them a message to express your interest.
Participation in sports is extremely important, and should be encouraged much more. Children and young people in particular need to do sport so that they develop good habits that they can continue into adulthood. The main benefits of sport are improved health and fitness, and the development of social and communication skills.
People that do sport on a regular basis are burning more calories than those that don’t, and are therefore less likely to end up overweight. Being a healthy weight means that you will be less likely to die young and suffer from heart disease, strokes, high blood pressure, diabetes and a range of other conditions, and if you already eat well, it can give you an extra calorie allowance so you can treat yourself without feeling guilty about it.
